Acer palmatum Sangokaku, or Coral Bark Maple, is a standout deciduous tree known for its vivid coral-red young branches, especially striking in Winter. Its finely divided lime green leaves emerge in Spring, turning golden-yellow with apricot tones in Autumn. With a tidy, upright shape and delicate foliage, it adds structure and seasonal colour to a variety of garden styles.
Ideal as a feature tree, it suits Japanese, woodland, and contemporary plantings, and pairs well with textured foliage and shade-tolerant groundcovers. Best planted in a sheltered spot with morning sun or dappled light, in moist, well-drained soil. Protect from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. Grows to around 4-5 metres tall and 2-3 metres wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune in late Winter or early Spring to shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy cuts.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early Spring. Avoid high-nitrogen products.
Watering: Keep soil moist during establishment and dry spells. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and scale on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Look out for wilting or dieback from verticillium wilt. Prune affected branches and ensure good drainage.
