Astilbe chinensis Alba is a graceful, moisture-loving perennial known for its upright plumes of pure white flowers that appear from mid to late Summer. These feathery flower spikes rise above a dense mound of finely cut, deep green foliage, brightening shaded areas with long-lasting seasonal interest.
An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and water-side plantings, this Astilbe thrives in part to full shade with consistently moist, well-drained soil. It benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Space plants 40–50cm apart to allow for natural clumping.
Reaches up to 60cm tall and 50cm wide, forming a soft, flowering mound that thrives in shady conditions.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy. In late autumn, trim foliage to ground level as it begins to die back naturally.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can improve appearance and redirect energy to the roots.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring, followed by a light top-up after flowering to support strong root development and next season’s growth.
Watering: Astilbe requires consistently moist soil—water regularly, particularly during dry spells and while establishing. Mulch can help retain moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs may occasionally nibble young shoots. Use slug bait or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease, but overly damp conditions can encourage root rot. Ensure soil is moist but well-drained, and remove any rotting foliage promptly.
