Astilbe x arendsii Fanal is a striking perennial celebrated for its deep red, feathery flower plumes that rise above dark bronze-green foliage. Flowering from mid to late Summer, it brings rich, saturated colour and fine texture to shaded areas of the garden.
Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and alongside water features, Fanal prefers part to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. It requires consistent watering, particularly during dry spells. Space plants 40–50cm apart to allow for full, natural spread.
Matures to approximately 60cm tall and 45cm wide, forming an upright, clump-forming perennial with vivid seasonal impact.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy. In late autumn, trim foliage to ground level as it begins to die back naturally.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can improve appearance and redirect energy to the roots.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring, followed by a light top-up after flowering to support strong root development and next season’s growth.
Watering: Astilbe requires consistently moist soil—water regularly, particularly during dry spells and while establishing. Mulch can help retain moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs may occasionally nibble young shoots. Use slug bait or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease, but overly damp conditions can encourage root rot. Ensure soil is moist but well-drained, and remove any rotting foliage promptly.
