Title Default Title

Austroderia richardii, commonly known as South Island toetoe, is a prominent and robust perennial grass native to New Zealand. This species is characterized by its tall, erect growth habit, lush green leaves, and striking flower plumes that emerge in late spring to early summer. The plumes are large, feathery, and initially cream-colored, gradually turning a golden-brown as they mature, lasting through autumn and into winter.

In the garden, Austroderia richardii is perfect for creating dramatic height and texture. Its tall plumes and arching foliage make it an excellent choice for specimen planting or en-mass in native, revegetation or coastal plantings, providing movement and a dynamic element to the landscape.

South Island toetoe thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types and conditions, including sandy and coastal areas, where it can withstand salty winds.

The mature size of Austroderia richardii can reach up to 2m high and wide.
