Rhododendron Azalea Autumn Sunburst is a compact, evergreen azalea known for its coral-pink, semi-double flowers with a soft white throat, flowering in flushes from spring through to autumn. Its neat growth and extended flowering period make it ideal for borders, containers, and small gardens.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and frost. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Space plants 60 to 80 centimetres apart for grouped planting.
Grows to around 90 centimetres tall and 90 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as this variety flowers on old and new wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and support new growth, though it is not strictly necessary.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid high-phosphorus blends to protect root health.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Mulch to retain moisture and maintain even soil temperature.
Pest Control: Monitor for lace bugs and aphids. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if pests are present.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent petal blight and fungal leaf spots. Avoid overhead watering and remove any yellowing or spotted foliage. Use well-drained, acidic soil to reduce the risk of root rot.
