Azalea Blue Danube

Azalea Blue Danube is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its deep blue-violet flowers. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a rich, even display. This is a reliable, tidy azalea with a dense habit that stays manageable in smaller spaces. Mature size reaches around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wide, making it a practical choice for borders and containers.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed border. Plant it in groups to build a solid block of cool-toned colour, or use single plants to add depth to a corner. The deep blue-violet tone pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas for a layered effect.

Grow Blue Danube in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and keep the plant compact. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at this time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and in any dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions, watch for powdery mildew. Check for leaf gall, which appears as pale, swollen growths; pick off affected tissue and bin it. Clear fallen leaves to reduce fungal risk.
