Azalea Hardy Gardenia

Azalea Hardy Gardenia is a Linwood hybrid valued for its large, double white flowers with a distinctive green throat. Flowering from spring through into summer, this evergreen shrub provides a long-lasting display that brightens shaded areas with its refined floral form and lush, deep green foliage.

Best suited to woodland and cottage-style gardens, it thrives in dappled light with slightly acidic, organically rich, moist but free-draining soil. Ideal for planting in borders, shaded garden beds or as part of an understorey layer. Consistent moisture and annual mulching help support healthy growth and prolonged flowering.

Reaches a mature size of around 80 cm high and wide, forming a compact, rounded shrub.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its compact, rounded shape and to remove any damaged or straggly growth. Avoid cutting back hard, as azaleas flower on old wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant and encourage strong bud development for the following season. Take care not to disturb new growth beneath the flowers.

Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again after flowering. Choose a balanced, slow-release product to support prolonged flowering and foliage health.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry spells, as shallow roots are sensitive to drying out. Maintain consistent moisture, particularly during flowering periods.

Pest Control: Watch for azalea lace bug and spider mites, especially during warm weather. Signs include mottled leaves or leaf drop—treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Apply a light mulch of pine bark or leaf litter annually, keeping it clear of the stem base to discourage fungal issues. Remove any yellowing or spotted leaves to maintain plant health.
