Azalea Leopold Astrid

Azalea Leopold Astrid is an evergreen azalea grown for its double, frilly flowers in white with dark pink to rose-red margins. The blooms appear in spring and create a detailed, two-tone display across the whole plant. It has a tidy, rounded habit and grows to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making it a reliable mid-sized shrub for many garden situations.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded formal border. Use several plants together for a massed display, or place a single specimen where the intricate flowers can be appreciated up close. The two-tone colouring pairs well with solid white or deep pink azaleas nearby.

Grow Leopold Astrid in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone to keep moisture in and roots cool. Avoid exposed, dry positions, which stress the shallow root system.

Trim lightly after flowering and feed each spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser. Water regularly through summer and in dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a compact, rounded shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports healthy new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the root system is shallow.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions watch for powdery mildew. Check for leaf gall, which appears as pale swollen growths on leaves; pick off affected tissue and bin it. Clear fallen leaves regularly to reduce fungal risk.
