Azalea Magnifica Rosea

Azalea Magnifica Rosea is a large evergreen azalea bearing single rich purple flowers. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in an even, generous display. It grows to around 2 to 3m high and wide, making it one of the bolder azaleas available for NZ gardens. The upright habit and consistent flowering make it a reliable choice for a long-lived shrub.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a woodland-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Use it as a background shrub or plant several together for a solid mass of colour. The rich purple tone pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas, and it works alongside rhododendrons of similar scale.

Grow Azalea Magnifica Rosea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid exposed, dry positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Like all azaleas, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to shape the plant and manage its size. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems to keep the centre open.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports the new season's growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and in any prolonged dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Avoid wet or heavy soil, which invites Phytophthora root rot. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce the risk of petal blight and leaf gall. Pick off any pale, swollen galls and bin them, do not compost.
