Azalea Palestrina

Azalea Palestrina is a compact evergreen azalea with white flowers marked by pale green flashes. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a clean, even display. This is a Kurume-type azalea, valued for its tidy, rounded habit and reliable performance from year to year. Mature plants reach around 1 to 1.5m high and wide.

Palestrina suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a formal border. Use it as a single feature plant in a shaded corner, or mass several together for a crisp white drift. The white flowers pair well with soft pink or lavender azaleas, and the plant works equally well in containers on a patio or deck.

Grow this azalea in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions, which dry out the roots and stress the plant.

Trim lightly after flowering and water regularly through dry spells. Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas and rhododendrons. Like all azaleas, Palestrina is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a tidy, rounded shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to neaten the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow roots.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk. In humid conditions, watch for powdery mildew. Clear fallen leaves regularly to reduce fungal pressure.
