Azalea Snow

Azalea Snow is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its white hose-in-hose double flowers. Each bloom sits inside a second layer of petals, giving the flowers a full, layered look. The display opens in spring and covers the plant densely. Mature plants reach around 0.8 to 1m high and wide, making this azalea a tidy fit for smaller spaces.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed border. Plant several together for a clean mass of white, or use single plants to brighten a darker corner. The white flowers pair well with pink or soft purple azaleas for a classic spring combination.

Grow Azalea Snow in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, dry, or exposed positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during any dry spells after that. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and shapely. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant after flowering, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil if numbers build.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Avoid wet or heavy ground, which encourages Phytophthora root rot. Check occasionally for leaf gall, which appears as pale, swollen growths; pick off affected parts and bin them. Clear fallen leaves to reduce fungal risk.
