Betula Polar Bear is a striking Himalayan birch cultivar known for its exceptionally bright white bark, which develops early and remains vibrant year-round. Its upright form is adorned with lush green foliage that turns clear yellow in Autumn, creating a strong seasonal display against the pale trunk.
Ideal for contemporary, woodland, and architectural garden styles, it makes a bold specimen tree or can be planted in groups for dramatic winter interest.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Performs best in cool climates and benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. Space 4–6 metres apart for group plantings.
Mature size reaches approximately 10–12 metres tall with a narrow to rounded crown spreading 4–6 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter to early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Maintain its upright, elegant shape with minimal intervention. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve its natural form and striking white bark.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring while the tree is establishing. Mature specimens growing in fertile soil usually require little to no feeding.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the first 1–2 years, especially in dry weather. Once established, 'Polar Bear' is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids on new growth in spring and summer. These can be treated with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Occasional leaf miner activity is usually cosmetic and doesn’t require control.
Disease Management: Susceptible to leaf spot and powdery mildew in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Ensure good airflow and remove fallen leaves to limit fungal spread. Keep the tree vigorous to reduce risk of dieback or borer susceptibility—consult an arborist if signs of stress appear.
