Betula Silver Shadow is a refined Himalayan birch cultivar admired for its exceptionally white, smooth bark that develops early and holds its brightness throughout the year. Its upright, elegant form is complemented by soft green foliage that shifts to rich yellow in Autumn, creating striking seasonal contrast against the pale trunk.

Ideal for contemporary, woodland, and architectural gardens, it makes a standout specimen tree and is equally effective in group plantings for dramatic structure and winter interest.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Performs best in cooler climates and benefits from consistent watering during dry spells. Space 4–6 metres apart to accommodate its canopy.

Mature size reaches 10–12 metres tall with a graceful, rounded crown spreading 4–6 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light shaping may be done to enhance its naturally graceful, upright form. Avoid heavy pruning, especially in summer, to prevent sap bleeding.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring during the establishment phase. Mature trees typically require little feeding if planted in fertile, well-drained soil.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the first 1–2 years. Once established, 'Silver Shadow' is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering in prolonged dry conditions.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, particularly on young shoots in spring. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur. Leaf miners may appear but rarely cause serious harm.

Disease Management: Prone to powdery mildew and leaf spot in humid or shaded areas. Maintain good airflow through and around the tree and remove fallen leaves to reduce disease spread. Keep the tree vigorous to reduce susceptibility to stress-related issues or borer damage. Seek professional advice if dieback or bark splitting is observed.
