Blechnum fraseri

Blechnum fraseri, also known as miniature tree fern or mauku, is a distinctive New Zealand native fern with a subtle trunk-forming habit and graceful, arching fronds. New growth emerges with copper-bronze tones, maturing to deep green, adding warm contrast and fine texture to shaded garden areas.

Ideal for native, rainforest, and woodland gardens, it makes an excellent feature in sheltered understory plantings, shaded borders, or beside water features.

Prefers partial to full shade and moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Requires consistent moisture and protection from frost and drying winds. Space 60–90 cm apart to highlight its natural form.

Mature size reaches 80–100 cm tall with a spread of up to 1 metre.

Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove old, damaged, or dead fronds at the base to maintain appearance and encourage healthy new growth. Avoid cutting healthy fronds, as they contribute to the plant's overall vigour.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growth is slow or if the plant is in poor soil. A mulch of organic matter such as compost or leaf litter can replicate its natural forest habitat and promote strong growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during establishment and in dry periods. Blechnum fraseri thrives in damp, shaded areas and does not tolerate extended dryness. Mulch to help retain soil moisture and maintain humidity.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Slugs or snails may occasionally feed on young fronds—control with organic methods if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased fronds promptly to keep the plant healthy.
