Blechnum minus

Blechnum minus, also known as soft water fern, is a delicate, spreading fern native to New Zealand, valued for its finely textured, softly arching fronds. The lush green foliage forms a layered ground cover, with new fronds occasionally flushed with bronze, lending subtle seasonal interest to shaded areas.

Perfect for native, woodland, and rainforest-style gardens, it thrives along damp stream banks, in shaded borders, or as underplanting in sheltered areas.

Prefers partial to full shade and consistently moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Ideal for areas with high humidity and sheltered from wind. Space 40–60 cm apart to form a gentle, natural carpet.

Mature size reaches 30–60 cm tall with a spreading habit up to 1 metre wide.

Trimming: Requires little maintenance. Remove old, damaged, or dead fronds at the base to keep the plant tidy and promote new growth. Avoid trimming healthy fronds, as they support overall plant health.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: In nutrient-poor soils, apply a light dressing of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. An annual mulch with compost or leaf litter helps mimic natural conditions and supports steady growth.

Watering: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil and thrives in damp, shaded environments. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing. Mulch helps retain moisture and maintain cool root conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, young fronds may attract slugs or snails—control with organic methods such as hand-picking or traps if damage is visible.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Good drainage and air circulation help prevent root rot and fungal issues. Remove any decaying or diseased fronds to maintain plant health.
