Blechnum montanum

Blechnum montanum, commonly known as mountain kiokio, is a hardy New Zealand native fern found in cool, elevated forest environments. It features upright to arching leathery fronds with a rich green tone and a distinctive, layered growth habit, adding texture and form to shaded garden areas.

Ideal for native, woodland, and rainforest-style gardens, it thrives as understorey planting in damp, sheltered locations or along shaded paths and stream edges.

Prefers partial to full shade and moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Tolerant of cooler temperatures and enjoys consistently damp conditions. Space 50–70 cm apart to create a natural, tiered effect.

Mature size reaches 50–80 cm tall with a spread of up to 1 metre.

Trimming: Minimal trimming required. Remove old, dead, or damaged fronds at the base to encourage healthy new growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid cutting back healthy fronds unless necessary.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growing in poor soil. An annual mulch with organic matter such as leaf litter or compost helps replicate its natural forest floor habitat and supports steady growth.

Watering: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the establishment phase. This fern thrives in cool, damp, shaded environments. Mulch helps conserve moisture and protect roots.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Watch for slugs or snails on young fronds; control with organic methods if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Remove and dispose of any yellowing or diseased fronds to maintain plant health and reduce the risk of fungal issues.
