Buxus harlandii Richard is a refined, small-leaved evergreen shrub known for its fine texture and compact, upright growth habit. With glossy, deep green foliage and a slower growth rate than many other Buxus varieties, it offers excellent control for shaping and is particularly well-suited to detailed topiary work or low, formal hedging.
This cultivar thrives in container planting, structured borders, and neatly clipped garden spaces, fitting well within formal, Oriental, and urban garden styles.
Prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Space 30-40 cm apart when using for hedging to form a dense line.
Mature size: Naturally compact, reaching around 80 cm high and 60 cm wide with a tidy, upright shape.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain its compact, naturally rounded shape. If used as a formal hedge or specimen, a second trim in late summer can help refine form. Avoid heavy pruning in autumn.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this variety is appreciated for its fine-textured evergreen foliage.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support steady growth. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which may result in sparse, soft growth.
Watering: Maintain even moisture during establishment and in extended dry conditions. This variety prefers well-drained soil—avoid overwatering, particularly in containers or humid climates.
Pest Control: Monitor for common Buxus pests such as psyllid and leafminer. Symptoms include puckered or distorted leaves. Treat promptly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to Buxus blight and root rot. Look out for yellowing or dropping leaves, black spotting, or stem dieback. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected foliage. Use a fungicide if necessary to manage blight.
