Camellia Baby Bear

Camellia japonica Baby Bear is a compact evergreen shrub that produces charming, semi-double white flowers with soft pink edges, appearing from late Winter through to early Spring. Its glossy, dark green foliage provides year-round structure, while the dainty flowers add a touch of subtle charm to your garden during the cooler months.
This versatile plant is perfect for small gardens, containers, or as a low hedge. Ideal for Japanese, woodland, or cottage-style gardens, it thrives in sheltered positions with dappled light or partial shade. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil with consistent moisture but avoids waterlogged areas. Space plants approximately 1 metre apart for hedging or group plantings.
Mature size: Reaches up to 1 metre in height and width, making it a perfect choice for compact spaces.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce next year’s flowers.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage tidy growth and prevent seed formation.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, acid-specific fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid fertilisers with high nitrogen content, as these can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and in dry periods, particularly during the warmer months. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
Pest Control: Watch for scale insects and aphids, particularly on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Monitor for signs of camellia petal blight (brown patches on flowers) and root rot. Ensure good air circulation and avoid water pooling around the roots to prevent disease. Remove affected flowers promptly to minimise spread.
