Camellia Mine-No-Yuki - Field-Grown

Camellia sasanqua Mine-No-Yuki is a captivating evergreen shrub known for its lush foliage and profuse white, semi-double flowers. This variety, whose name translates to "Snow on the Mountain," offers a serene and elegant presence in the garden, flowering prolifically in late autumn to early winter.

Camellia Mine-No-Yuki is ideal for adding brightness and contrast to shaded garden areas, where its white flowers can glow against the dark green leaves. It's perfect for use as a specimen plant, in foundation plantings, or as part of a mixed border. Additionally, it serves well as an informal hedge or screen, providing privacy and year-round interest with its evergreen leaves.

This camellia variety thrives in partial shade, avoiding the hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and flowers. It prefers well-drained, acidic soil, rich in organic matter, to flourish and produce its signature white flowers. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, will keep it healthy and support its flowering season.

When planting Mine-No-Yuki, consider its mature size for spacing. For hedges or mass plantings, spacing of about 1-1.5m apart is recommended, allowing each plant enough room to develop fully and display its natural shape and beauty.

Reaching a mature size of about 2-4m in height and 1.5-2.5m in width, 'Mine No Yuki' camellia remains a manageable and striking addition to any garden. Its elegant form, coupled with the delicate beauty of its white flowers and dark green foliage, ensures it remains a focal point in the garden throughout the year, particularly during its flowering season in the cooler months.

Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.

Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to shape and keep the plant dense. Remove dead, weak, crossing or inward-growing branches to improve airflow. If growing as a hedge, clip just after flowering and again lightly in late spring to maintain an even line (avoid hard pruning).

Deadheading: Optional, but removing spent flowers keeps the plant tidy and reduces petal drop. Rake up fallen petals and old flowers from the ground to help limit fungal problems.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with an acid-lover fertiliser (camellia/azalea/rhododendron). On lighter or sandy soils, a second light feed in late spring can help. Avoid feeding from late summer onwards so new growth can harden before winter.

Watering: Water regularly through the establishment phase (first 12-18 months), especially in dry spells. Once established, give a deep soak during prolonged dry periods and heatwaves. Consistent moisture supports bud development and reduces bud drop. Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool (keep mulch clear of the stem).

Pest control: Check for scale (tiny shell-like bumps on stems/leaf undersides) and sooty mould (black coating from honeydew). Treat scale with horticultural oil, coating stems and leaf undersides; repeat if needed. Watch for aphids on soft tips and use insecticidal soap if they become heavy.

Disease management:

• Petal blight: Flowers brown rapidly and collapse. Remove and bin affected blooms and fallen petals (don’t compost) and keep the area clean.
• Leaf gall: Swollen, fleshy leaves that turn whitish. Pick off and bin early before spores spread.
• Root/collar rot (poor drainage): Yellowing, poor growth, dieback, or sudden collapse. Improve drainage, avoid waterlogging, and keep mulch off the trunk; remove badly affected plants if decline is advanced.
