Coprosma Middlemore is a hardy, evergreen New Zealand native shrub with small, glossy green leaves and a dense, upright growth habit. Its compact form and fine-textured foliage make it an excellent option for shaping, screening, or adding structure to native and low-maintenance gardens.
Suitable for native, coastal, and formal garden styles, Coprosma Middlemore is ideal for hedging, borders, or background planting. It performs best in full sun to part shade and prefers free-draining soil. Tolerant of wind and coastal conditions. Space approximately 60 to 80 cm apart for hedging.
Forms a tidy, upright shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1 to 1.2 metres wide.
Trimming: Trim lightly in late summer to maintain a neat, compact shape. For hedging or structured planting, clip more regularly to encourage dense, even growth. Remove any dead or straggly stems as needed.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils or for potted specimens, supplement with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.
Watering: Water consistently during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Watch for scale or mealybugs in sheltered or humid spots. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: This variety is typically disease-resistant. Avoid overwatering and ensure soil drains freely to prevent root rot. Prune out any deadwood and provide adequate airflow to reduce the risk of fungal issues.
