Coprosma robusta, commonly known as karamu, is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. Karamu is known for its glossy, dark green leaves and its robust nature, making it a versatile plant in various garden settings. It produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers, followed by orange-red berries that attract birds, adding wildlife interest to the garden.

In the garden, Coprosma robusta is excellent for hedging, screening, and providing a lush, dense backdrop for other plantings. Its hardy nature makes it suitable for coastal gardens, windbreaks, and urban environments. The plant fits well in native, informal, or woodland garden styles, contributing to a green, vibrant landscape throughout the year.

Karamu thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, preferring well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and can handle some wet conditions. For a dense hedge or screen, plants should be spaced approximately 1m apart.

The mature size for Coprosma robusta is about 2-3m in height and 1-2m in width, making it an excellent choice for adding structure and height.
