Corokia x virgata

Corokia x virgata, commonly known as wire netting bush or korokio, is a distinctive shrub with an interlacing, wiry branch structure and small, dark green leaves. It is a hybrid species of Corokia, known for its toughness and adaptability, and it produces small, yellow, star-shaped flowers in spring, followed by red or yellow berries that attract birds.

In the garden, Corokia x virgata is highly valued for its unique form and texture, making it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or as a specimen plant in contemporary or native-themed gardens. Its dense, twiggy appearance provides a strong visual interest throughout the year, and it can be used effectively to create intricate patterns or as a backdrop for other plants.

This shrub prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It is drought-resistant once established and can tolerate a range of conditions, including coastal and windy environments. For planting as a hedge or screen, a spacing of about 50-60cm apart is recommended to allow the plants to interlace and form a dense, textured barrier.

The mature size of Corokia x virgata typically ranges from 1-3m in height and width, depending on the specific variety and growing conditions.
