Dicksonia antarctica

Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Soft Tree Fern, is an impressive evergreen fern native to Australia. Known for its striking appearance, this fern features a thick, fibrous trunk covered in old frond bases and a stunning crown of large, arching fronds. Its lush, green foliage creates a dramatic and tropical atmosphere in any garden.

Growing with an upright habit, Dicksonia antarctica can reach an impressive height of 4-5 metres and spread 2-4 metres wide. This makes it perfect for creating a focal point in shaded or woodland gardens, adding height and texture to garden beds, or as a standout plant in large containers. It thrives in gardens designed with a tropical, woodland, or Mediterranean style and complements other shade-loving plants beautifully.

This fern prefers a sheltered position with part shade to full shade, where it can be protected from harsh direct sunlight. It thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. During hot, dry summers, regular watering is crucial, especially around the stem. However, avoid watering the crown in winter to prevent rot. Dicksonia antarctica will grow without winter protection only in milder areas; in colder climates, protect the crown with a layer of mulch or fleece during winter to prevent frost damage.
