Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora, commonly known Yellow Daphne or Paperbush, is an interesting deciduous shrub with stout stems in spring producing large silvery buds opening to heads of fragrant, golden-yellow tubular flowers. Native to woodland areas in China, this plant brings a touch of exotic beauty to the garden with its elegant, umbrella-shaped flower clusters and smooth, grey bark. Its early flowering period provides much-needed colour and fragrance when many other plants are still dormant, making it a valuable asset for winter and early spring interest.
Ideal for use in Japanese-style gardens, woodland gardens, or as part of a winter interest garden, it fits well into naturalistic planting schemes. Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora thrives best in partial shade to full shade, mimicking its natural woodland habitat, and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain its lush foliage and vigorous growth.
Mature plants can reach a height and spread of 1.5-2 m. Space plants about 1.5-2m apart to allow them to spread gracefully and showcase their arching branches.
Trimming: Prune in late spring after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning as this can reduce flowering for the next season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, as this plant prefers moderately fertile soil.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, ensure the soil remains consistently moist, especially during hot weather, but avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for aphids and scale insects. If infestations occur, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil, ensuring thorough coverage.
Disease Management: Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soil to prevent potential fungal diseases. Remove any affected plant parts promptly to maintain overall plant health.
