Elaeocarpus hookerianus, commonly known as Pokaka, is a evergreen tree native to New Zealand featuring attractive, glossy green leaves that turn a stunning red or orange in the cooler months. In spring, it produces small, bell-shaped white flowers that add a delicate charm to its overall appearance, followed by dark, fleshy fruit that provide visual interest and attract native birds. Its upright, conical form and dense foliage create a significant presence in the landscape.

In the garden, Elaeocarpus hookerianus is a versatile and hardy tree that can be used as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a native planting scheme. It thrives in a variety of garden styles, including native, woodland, and mixed ornamental gardens. This tree prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil with moderate moisture.

Elaeocarpus hookerianus can grow to a mature height of 10-15m with a spread of 4-6m. For optimal growth, space plants about 3-4m apart to accommodate their mature size and allow them to develop their natural shape.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain a desired shape. Light trimming throughout the year can help keep the plant tidy.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This plant generally thrives in moderately fertile soil, so avoid excessive fertilisation.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, Elaeocarpus hookerianus is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. However, monitor for common pests such as aphids and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Elaeocarpus hookerianus is typically disease-resistant. Ensure proper air circulation and avoid waterlogged soil to prevent potential fungal diseases. Remove any affected plant parts promptly to maintain plant health.
