Erica Melanthera Improved

Erica Melanthera Improved is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its abundant soft lilac-pink flowers that appear from late winter through spring, providing valuable colour when few other plants are in flower. Its fine, needle-like foliage forms a neat, mounded shape, offering year-round structure and texture. Reaching approximately 30-40 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it’s ideal for coastal, cottage, and low-maintenance gardens, as well as rockeries and container displays.

Plant in full sun with free-draining, acidic soil. Tolerates light frost and dry conditions once established. Space plants 30-40 cm apart to allow for airflow and mature spread. Light pruning after flowering encourages dense growth and maintains a compact form. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a dense, compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Do not cut into old wood, as Ericas generally do not regenerate well from it.

Deadheading: Not required, as the plant naturally drops its spent flowers. Post-flowering trimming helps remove old blooms and tidy the plant.

Fertilising: Use a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid alkaline or lime-based fertilisers, as Erica thrives in acidic conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods. Erica melanthera prefers moist, free-draining, acidic soil-avoid waterlogging and ensure good drainage.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but aphids may occasionally appear on new growth. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. In damp conditions, watch for signs of fungal issues like leaf spot-remove affected foliage and improve air circulation around the plant. Avoid overhead watering.
