Euphorbia glauca, commonly known as New Zealand Sea Spurge, is a striking evergreen perennial native to New Zealand. This plant is noted for its attractive blue-green foliage and unique flower structures. The leaves are elongated and succulent-like, creating a lush, coastal appearance. In late spring to summer, it produces clusters of small, reddish-brown flowers surrounded by greenish-yellow bracts, adding an intriguing element to the garden. Euphorbia glauca is perfect for rock gardens, coastal plantings, and mixed borders.
New Zealand Sea Spurge thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. It is highly adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and is particularly well-suited to coastal conditions due to its salt tolerance. This hardy plant is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Regular watering during the establishment phase promotes strong root growth, and occasional pruning helps maintain its shape and encourage new growth. Space plants about 30-40 cm apart to allow for proper air circulation and spread.
At maturity, Euphorbia glauca reaches a height of approximately 50-80 cm and spreads about 50-80 cm, forming a compact, bushy clump.
