Feijoa Pounamu

Feijoa 'Pounamu' is a compact, evergreen fruiting shrub selected in New Zealand for its reliable cropping and attractive form. It produces soft green, egg-shaped fruit with sweet, aromatic flesh ripening from late autumn. In early summer, striking red and white flowers with prominent stamens appear, attracting birds and pollinators. With a dense, upright habit reaching around 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it's ideal for edible hedging, screening, or as a feature in subtropical, coastal, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and light frost once established. Space plants 1.5-2 metres apart for hedging. Prune after fruiting to shape and encourage airflow. Water during dry periods, especially while fruit is developing. Harvest fruit when it naturally drops or yields slightly to pressure. Self-fertile but improved yields with cross-pollination.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and open up the canopy, improving airflow and fruit production. Remove any dead, crossing, or weak branches. If grown as a hedge, trim after fruiting to maintain size and density.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as the flowers are followed by fruit and are a key ornamental feature.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. Apply a second feed in mid-summer to support flowering and fruit development. Mulching with compost or well-rotted manure helps improve soil structure and nutrient levels.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during flowering and fruiting. While moderately drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture improves fruit quality. Ensure soil is well-drained.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though guava moth (in some regions) can damage fruit. Use pheromone traps or protective fruit bags where necessary.

Disease Management: Feijoas are generally disease-resistant. To prevent fungal issues, ensure good air circulation by avoiding overcrowding. Remove fallen fruit and foliage to maintain hygiene and reduce disease risk.
