Hebe chathamica

Hebe chathamica is a hardy, evergreen New Zealand native shrub valued for its broad, glossy green leaves and dense, rounded form. In late spring to early summer, it produces short spikes of pale lilac to white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. With its naturally compact habit, typically reaching 1 to 1.5 metres high and wide, it suits native, coastal, low-maintenance, and informal garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, coastal conditions, and light frost. Space plants 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mass planting or hedging. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. A dependable, easy-care native shrub that offers year-round structure and subtle seasonal interest.

Trimming: Shear back hard after the main summer flowering to encourage a flush of fresh foliage and a possible second bloom. In early spring, tidy the plant by removing dead or damaged growth.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to extend the flowering period and minimise self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, follow up with a light liquid feed after trimming to support continued vigour.

Watering: Water consistently during the establishment phase. Once established, it tolerates short dry spells but performs best in evenly moist, well-drained soil.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Slugs may occasionally target new growth-use organic controls as needed.

Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease. Maintain good airflow to avoid mildew and leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly, and divide clumps every few years to prevent overcrowding and maintain plant health.
