Hebe Ohau

Hebe 'Ohau' is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its fine, dark green foliage and profusion of soft mauve to lavender-pink flower spikes that appear from late spring through summer. The blooms attract bees and other pollinators, while the shrub's tidy, rounded form provides year-round structure. Growing to around 60-80 cm high and wide, it suits cottage, coastal, native, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, light frost, and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for borders or grouped plantings. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage further blooming. Avoid heavy, wet soils in winter. A reliable, long-flowering shrub that brings soft colour and texture to sunny garden spaces.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy stems in late winter or early spring. Avoid cutting into old wood, as regrowth can be limited.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can tidy the plant and may encourage a light repeat flowering.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can support healthy foliage and flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Hebe ‘Ohau’ is reasonably drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during dry periods. Requires free-draining soil to prevent root issues.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and scale insects may occasionally appear. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of fungal leaf spot and root rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly and avoid overly wet or poorly drained soils.
