Helleborus Sophies Delight

Helleborus Sophies Delight is a refined, evergreen perennial featuring soft white flowers with deep raspberry-pink edges, creating a striking two-tone effect. Flowering from late Winter through to mid-Spring, the upright blooms sit above marbled green foliage, bringing vibrant colour and structure to shaded parts of the garden when most other plants are dormant.

Ideal for woodland, cottage, or contemporary gardens, Helleborus Sophies Delight is perfect for underplanting, shaded borders, or container displays. It grows best in partial to full shade with moist, free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Space approximately 40-50 cm apart to ensure healthy growth and airflow.

Forms a neat, clump-forming plant approximately 45 cm high and 60 cm wide.

Trimming: Cut back old and tired foliage in late winter or early spring before new blooms and fresh growth appear. This improves airflow and showcases the flowers.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to maintain a tidy look and prevent self-seeding, unless seedlings are desired.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. A light top-up feed in late summer can help support healthy root development and next season’s flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Sophie’s Delight is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids on new growth-treat with insecticidal soap if needed. Slugs and snails may target young foliage, particularly in moist, shaded conditions.

Disease Management: Susceptible to Hellebore leaf spot-remove any marked or spotted leaves promptly. Avoid overhead watering and maintain good airflow around the plant to minimise fungal issues. Remove old foliage annually to support plant health.
