Hydrangea Summer Glow

Hydrangea Summer Glow is a compact deciduous shrub admired for its large, rounded flower heads that provide a long-lasting display from Summer into early Autumn. The lush green foliage forms an attractive backdrop to the vibrant flowers, making this variety an excellent choice for adding colour and structure to the garden. It performs beautifully in borders, mixed plantings, or large containers and is well suited to smaller garden spaces.

Ideal for borders, feature planting, courtyard gardens, containers, and mass planting. Suits cottage, woodland, and contemporary gardens.

Grows best in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the soil consistently moist during dry periods. Space plants approximately 1–1.2m apart.

Mature size: Forms a dense, rounded shrub approximately 1–1.2m high and wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring by removing dead, damaged, or weak stems and lightly shaping the plant. Hydrangea Summer Glow flowers on old wood, so avoid hard pruning, as this can reduce flowering in the following season.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after flowering by cutting back to the first healthy pair of buds below the faded blooms. Alternatively, leave the dried flower heads in place over winter for added interest and protection of developing buds.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser for flowering shrubs in early spring. A second light application after the main flowering period can help support healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which encourage foliage at the expense of flowering.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase to keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, as hydrangeas are sensitive to drought stress, particularly during summer.

Pest control: Inspect regularly for aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary, and encourage beneficial insects to assist with natural pest control.

Disease management: Watch for powdery mildew, botrytis (grey mould), and leaf spot. Signs include white powdery patches on leaves, grey mould on flowers, or dark leaf spots. Improve air circulation, remove affected foliage and spent flowers, avoid overhead watering where possible, and apply a suitable fungicide if required.
