Lagerstroemia Ruby Red is a standout deciduous crepe myrtle that produces rich ruby-red flower clusters through summer, adding strong colour when the garden is at its brightest. The fresh foliage forms a neat canopy through spring and summer, often colouring up as the weather cools, while older plants can develop smooth, mottled bark that adds extra interest once the leaves drop.
Ideal for modern, Mediterranean, or cottage garden styles, Ruby Red thrives in full sun and a warm, sheltered position for the best flowering. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil and avoid cold, exposed sites, particularly in frost-prone areas. Water regularly while establishing, then during dry spells in summer, and prune in late winter to encourage vigorous new flowering growth. Space plants 2-3 m apart to allow for a balanced, well-shaped plant.
Mature size: Reaches around 3-5 m in height and 2-4 m in width, forming a rounded shrub or small tree.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, weak, or crossing branches and shape lightly to maintain a strong, upright habit. Avoid excessive pruning, as this can reduce flowering.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower clusters can improve appearance and may encourage a light second flush.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support vigorous growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during long dry periods. Ensure soil is well drained.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and scale, particularly on young shoots. Treat early signs with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to prevent sooty mould.
Disease Management: Provide good airflow and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of powdery mildew. Remove any affected foliage promptly and use free-draining soil to help prevent root rot.
