Leptospermum Mercury Island is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree known for its fine, grey-green foliage and profusion of delicate, pale pink flowers that appear in spring and summer. This New Zealand native is low-maintenance and highly tolerant of coastal conditions, making it a popular choice for exposed gardens. The flowers are a valuable nectar source for pollinators, enhancing your garden’s ecosystem.
This versatile plant suits coastal, native, and contemporary garden styles and works well as a hedge, screen, or specimen plant. Prefers a sunny position with free-draining soil and tolerates light frosts and dry conditions once established. Space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart for hedging or allow room for its natural shape.
Mature size: Reaches up to 3 metres in height and 2 metres in width, forming a compact, bushy habit.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its compact shape and remove any dead or damaged growth. Avoid heavy pruning as it may not regrow from old wood.
Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus, native plant fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional watering in hot weather.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests but keep an eye out for scale insects. Treat with horticultural oil or prune off affected areas.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, though poor drainage can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent this issue.
