Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as manuka or New Zealand tea tree, is a small evergreen shrub or tree that is well-known for its ability to produce small, aromatic, needle-like leaves and showy, white or pink flowers. These flowers are particularly attractive to bees.

In the garden, Leptospermum scoparium is versatile, serving well as a specimen plant, in mixed shrub borders, or as part of a native planting scheme. It's also an excellent choice for erosion control and as a windbreak in coastal areas due to its hardy nature. Manuka fits beautifully in naturalistic, woodland, or coastal garden styles, providing year-round interest with its evergreen foliage and seasonal bloom.

Manuka prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and it thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. It is relatively drought-resistant once established and can handle poor soil conditions, making it a resilient choice for challenging sites. For a hedge or dense planting, spacing of about 1m apart is recommended to allow each plant to flourish while forming a continuous screen.
