Magnolia grandiflora Teddy Bear is a compact evergreen tree that looks great in medium-sized gardens. Flowers are fragrant, large, cup-shaped, and creamy white. Foliage is large, rich green in a tight branch structure. For optimum growth, plant it in part shade, protected from the wind. It likes fertile, free-draining soil. Up to 5m tall when mature.
Trimming: Trim lightly only as needed to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain its natural shape. Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ generally needs very little pruning, and any shaping is best kept minimal.
Deadheading: Deadheading is optional. You can remove spent flowers to keep the plant looking tidy, though this becomes less practical as the tree matures.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with an acid-balanced or controlled-release fertiliser, and add organic mulch or compost to help support healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, especially through the first few summers and during hot or dry periods. Once established, it is more resilient but still benefits from deep watering in extended dry spells.
Pest control: Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ is generally resistant to major pest problems, but check for scale insects and associated sooty mould on the foliage and stems. Treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if required.
Disease management: Serious disease issues are uncommon, but watch for leaf spot, dieback, and root problems in wet soil. Good drainage, careful watering, and removal of affected material will help prevent most issues.
