Magnolia x loebneri Leonard Messel, commonly known as Leonard Messel Magnolia, is a deciduous tree admired for its abundant mid-spring blooms. The deep lilac buds open to reveal soft lilac-pink flowers with white interiors, each reaching up to 12cm in width and featuring as many as 12 tepals. This hybrid, a cross between Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata, begins flowering at a young age and makes a fantastic option for a street tree or a specimen plant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soil.
In the garden, Leonard Messel Magnolia is ideal as a focal point in larger landscapes, mixed borders, or woodland gardens. The tree's star-shaped flowers appear on bare branches before the leaves emerge, creating a striking and fragrant display. The foliage, which follows the blooms, is an attractive medium green and provides a lush backdrop throughout the summer.
When planting Magnolia Leonard Messel, choose a site with full sun to partial shade and protection from strong winds. The tree thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter but can adapt to neutral soils if they are moisture retentive. Regular watering is essential, particularly during the establishment period and dry spells. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and temperature. Minimal pruning is required but should be done immediately after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.
Reaches 8m in height, 6m wide.
