Magnolia Still Me

Magnolia Still Me is a striking deciduous magnolia known for its rich, deep purple-red flowers that emerge in early to mid-spring before the foliage appears. The upright, goblet-shaped flowers are bold and generously sized, making a strong visual impact during the seasonal transition. As the blooms fade, fresh green leaves unfold to form a well-shaped canopy that provides a clean, leafy backdrop throughout the growing season.

An excellent choice for contemporary, cottage, and formal gardens, Still Me shines as a specimen tree, in a lawn setting, or near outdoor living areas where its vibrant early flowers can be admired up close.

Plant in full sun to light shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Protect from strong winds and avoid frost pockets to preserve early flower quality. Space around 3-4 metres from other trees or structures to allow full development.

Typically grows to 3.5-4 metres tall and 2.5-3 metres wide at maturity, forming a neat, upright tree with a vivid spring flowering display and tidy seasonal structure.

Trimming: Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering in late spring or early summer. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can reduce next season’s flowering and spoil the tree’s natural shape.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring, just as growth begins. Mulch annually with composted bark or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and moisture retention.

Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first few years after planting. Established trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from supplemental watering in prolonged dry conditions.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally susceptible to scale insects or aphids on new growth—treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.

Disease Management: Watch for leaf spot and honey fungus, although both are uncommon. Avoid injuring the roots when planting or cultivating nearby, as magnolias are shallow-rooted. Improve air circulation by thinning overcrowded growth if leaf spotting occurs.
