Metrosideros tomentosa Dalese is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its striking crimson-red flowers that appear in summer and glossy, dark green foliage with silvery undersides. This hardy cultivar of the pōhutukawa tree is ideal for smaller gardens, offering the beauty of a pōhutukawa in a more manageable size. It attracts birds and pollinators, adding vibrancy and movement to your outdoor space.
Suited to coastal, native, and contemporary gardens, it thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Dalese is highly tolerant of coastal winds, salt spray, and dry conditions once established. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or allow room for its naturally dense, rounded shape.
Mature size: Reaches up to 1.5 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide, forming a compact, bushy shrub ideal for smaller spaces or containers.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its compact shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Occasional trimming encourages dense growth.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy foliage and flowering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and improve soil health.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects or aphids on new growth and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of myrtle rust, indicated by yellow-orange pustules on young foliage or stems. Promptly remove and safely dispose of infected areas and apply a fungicide if needed.
