Title Default Title

Michelia figo, also known as Magnolia figo or Port Wine Magnolia, is a dense, multi-stemmed evergreen shrub or small tree that is highly valued for its ornamental and fragrant qualities. The glossy, pale-green leaves extend down to the ground, creating a lush and verdant appearance. This small tree produces small, yellow and pink flowers hidden among the leaves, which release a delightful fruity fragrance from late spring through summer.

Michelia figo is ideal for various uses in the garden, including hedging, topiary, and as a specimen tree. It can be pruned into any shape, making it versatile and adaptable for different landscaping needs. It also performs well in large containers, allowing it to be a focal point on patios or terraces. Planting it where you can enjoy the sweet scent of its flowers is highly recommended.

This medium-sized evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 metres in height and 2 metres in width, depending on pruning. The leaves are small, elliptic to oblong, dark green above, paler below, and glossy. In spring, the tree produces masses of small, brown, furry buds, from which a profusion of small, creamy-yellow flowers edged with purple-pink emerge.

For optimal growth, Michelia figo prefers full sun to partial shade in moist, acidic, well-drained soil. It thrives in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and frost.
