Nepeta Blue Wonder

Nepeta faassenii Blue Wonder, also known as Catmint, is a compact and prolific flowering perennial that brings colour and fragrance to the garden. This variety produces dense spikes of soft lavender-blue flowers from late spring to early autumn, creating a long-lasting display. Its aromatic, silvery-green foliage forms a bushy mound.  

It's an excellent choice for edging pathways, softening borders, or filling rock gardens with its flowing, mounded habit. It pairs beautifully with roses, ornamental grasses, and other sun-loving perennials in cottage gardens, conempory or Mediterranean-style plantings.  This Catmint thrives in full sun but will tolerate light shade. It prefers well-drained soil, adapting well to sandy or rocky conditions. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and thrives in low-maintenance gardens. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained soils to keep the plant healthy and thriving.

Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart for a lush but airy display that allows for natural spreading. Reaches about 25–30 cm in height and spreading up to 40 cm. 

Trimming: Trim back spent flower spikes after the first flush of blooms to encourage a second flowering. In late autumn or early spring, cut the plant back to ground level to refresh its growth.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead faded flowers to prolong the blooming season and maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if the soil is poor. Over-fertilising should be avoided, as Nepeta thrives in lean, well-drained soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, this variety is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but keep an eye out for aphids. If detected, treat with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by diseases. To prevent fungal issues, ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
This compact Nepeta variety features aromatic foliage and vibrant blue flowers, making it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, or container planting, with the added benefit of attracting pollinators.
