Peony Chippewa

Chippewa is a stunning herbaceous peony showcasing large, fully double flowers in a rich ruby-red shade with a soft sheen that glows in the sunlight. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the bold flowers are lightly fragrant and stand proudly above lush, dark green foliage, making it a striking feature in the garden or as a cut flower.

Perfect for cottage, formal, and cut-flower gardens, Chippewa is ideal for borders, mass planting, or feature displays. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to promote strong flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature clumps.

Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to just above a leaf node to maintain a tidy appearance. In autumn, once the foliage has yellowed and died back naturally, cut all stems to ground level and dispose of them to prevent overwintering diseases.

Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to improve appearance and help the plant focus energy on root and bud development.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application just after flowering can support strong root development and flower bud formation for the following year.

Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, especially while the plant is flowering or establishing. Peonies prefer evenly moist, well-draining soil. Avoid overwatering or soggy conditions, which may lead to root rot.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally check for aphids or thrips on young growth and buds. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Susceptible to botrytis blight in damp or humid conditions. Remove any affected stems and leaves promptly. Avoid overhead watering, ensure good airflow, and clear away dead foliage in autumn to minimise fungal issues.
