Phoenix canariensis, the Canary Island date palm, is a bold, architectural palm with a stout trunk and a full crown of long, arching fronds. In summer it produces creamy-yellow flowering clusters, followed by small orange-brown dates that add extra seasonal interest. Its strong silhouette makes an instant focal point in lawns, large borders, or along driveways and entrances.

Perfect for coastal, Mediterranean, or contemporary garden styles, Phoenix canariensis thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, though it will cope with a range of conditions once established. Water regularly while young, then only during extended dry spells, and plant in a sheltered spot away from severe frost and cold winds for best performance. Space plants 4-6 m apart to allow the crown to develop without crowding.

Mature size: Reaches around 10-15 m in height and 4-6 m in width, forming a large palm with a broad, dramatic crown.

Trimming: Remove dead or damaged fronds by cutting them close to the trunk. Avoid removing healthy green fronds, especially those near the crown, as this can weaken the palm. Trim in late winter or early spring if needed.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release palm fertiliser in spring and again in mid-summer. Ensure the fertiliser includes magnesium and potassium to prevent leaf yellowing.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Pest Control: Watch for scale, mealybugs, and palm aphids. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Monitor the crown for signs of borer activity.

Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to avoid root rot. Remove old fronds promptly to reduce the risk of fungal diseases, and avoid overhead watering to minimise crown rot. Maintain good airflow around the plant.
