Pistacia chinensis, commonly known as Chinese Pistachio, is a deciduous tree admired for its vibrant autumn foliage and tidy, rounded canopy. Its dark green, pinnate leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold in late autumn, offering standout seasonal colour. Small greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by clusters of red berries that ripen to blue on female trees.

Thriving in full sun with well-draining soil, Pistacia chinensis suits Mediterranean, urban, and dry garden styles. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Plant with at least 5–6 metres spacing. At maturity, it typically reaches 8–12 metres tall and 6–8 metres wide, forming a strong, upright structure with excellent seasonal appeal.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or poorly spaced branches and to maintain a strong, balanced structure. Young trees benefit from light formative pruning to develop a single leader and even canopy.

Fertilising: Fertilising is generally unnecessary in good garden soils. In nutrient-poor conditions, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Pistacia chinensis is typically pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear on new growth; these can be managed with a strong water spray or horticultural soap if needed.

Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, though overly wet conditions may lead to fungal root issues. Ensure planting in well-draining soil and avoid excessive watering to prevent disease.
