Pittosporum tenuifolium Small Ball is an extremely compact, evergreen shrub with very small leaves and a naturally dense, rounded form. Its tidy growth habit makes it an excellent choice for low hedging, edging, or mass planting in both residential and commercial landscapes.
Low-maintenance and easy to grow, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Hardy to wind, light frost, and coastal exposure, it suits a variety of garden styles. Typically reaches 2 metres in height and 1.5 metres wide, offering year-round structure with minimal upkeep.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring or early summer to maintain its naturally compact, rounded form. For hedging or shaping, clip more regularly to encourage dense growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy, even growth—especially important for clipped specimens or hedges.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering in extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally low-maintenance, but may occasionally attract aphids or scale insects. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to manage infestations.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Maintain good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of sooty mould or other fungal issues. Remove any affected foliage to maintain plant health.
