Podocarpus gracilior, commonly known as the Fern Pine, is a graceful evergreen conifer is noted for its soft, feathery foliage, appearing in vibrant shades of green. Its upright, pyramidal form provides architectural interest, offering a stunning contrast to more traditional garden plants.
It thrives in a variety of well-drained soil types and can tolerate both acidic and alkaline conditions. It appreciates full sun to partial shade and demonstrates a high degree of drought tolerance once established.
Given its elegant form and lush foliage,it makes a beautiful specimen tree. Additionally, its dense growth makes it perfect for creating tall screens or hedges, providing privacy without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
Podocarpus gracilior can reach a notable height of 12-15 metres at maturity, depending on the growing conditions. It can be pruned easily to maintain a smaller size and a neat, pyramidal shape, according to your garden's needs.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
