Prunus Thundercloud

Prunus Thundercloud produces fragrant flowers that are pale pink and bowl-shaped on bare branches. Edible small red fruit follows the flowers which is ready to harvest in summer or early autumn. Tolerant of exposed and coastal sites. Position in full sun. Suits a well-drained, moist soil. Deciduous. Hardy. 8m x 4m.

Trimming: Trim Prunus ‘Thundercloud’ in summer after flowering, if needed, to maintain shape and remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can spoil the natural form and increase the risk of disease.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser, or apply compost around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk. Avoid overfeeding, as this can encourage soft growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, provide deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in hot, dry, or windy conditions.

Pest control: Watch for aphids, scale, caterpillars, and mites. Signs include curled leaves, sticky honeydew, sooty mould, webbing, or chewed foliage. Treat light infestations with a firm spray of water or insecticidal soap, and remove badly affected growth if needed.

Disease management: Look out for silver leaf, bacterial canker, leaf spot, and brown rot. Signs include wilting shoots, sunken or oozing lesions, dieback, spotted leaves, or shrivelled fruit. Prune only in dry weather, remove infected material, improve airflow, and use an appropriate fungicide or copper-based treatment where suitable.
