Rhododendron 'White Pearl' is a beautiful, evergreen shrub known for its profuse display of pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear in mid to late spring. The blooms are held in rounded trusses above deep green foliage, creating a soft, luminous effect in shaded garden areas. With a dense, rounded habit reaching around 1.5-2 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for woodland, cottage, and acid-loving garden styles, either as a feature shrub or part of a layered planting.
Plant in partial shade with moist, well-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Space plants 1.2-1.5 metres apart for hedging or grouped plantings. Water regularly during dry spells and mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape. Protect from strong winds and avoid planting in deep shade to ensure good flowering. A reliable and graceful choice for seasonal and year-round interest.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid cutting into old wood, as rhododendrons have limited ability to regenerate from hard pruning.
Deadheading: Snap off spent flower trusses after blooming to improve appearance and encourage healthy new shoot development.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. A second light feed after flowering can help support continued growth. Avoid using lime or alkaline fertilisers.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods and while the plant is establishing. Rhododendron ‘White Pearl’ thrives in free-draining, acidic soil. Apply an annual mulch of pine bark or leaf mould to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as vine weevils, lace bugs, and aphids. Treat early with insecticidal soap, neem oil, or appropriate biological controls.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. Remove and dispose of any yellowing or diseased foliage. Plant in well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
