Sedum 'Pink Ice' is a compact, clump-forming perennial prized for its succulent, silvery-blue foliage and soft pink flower heads that appear from late summer into autumn. The domed flower clusters attract bees and butterflies, adding late-season interest to the garden. With a tidy, upright habit reaching 25 to 30 cm high and 30 to 40 cm wide, it is ideal for rock, coastal, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil, including poor or sandy conditions. Drought-tolerant once established and thrives in hot, dry spots. Space plants 25 to 30 cm apart. Remove spent flower heads in winter or leave them for structural interest. A hardy, easy-care perennial that provides colour, texture, and pollinator value well into autumn.
Trimming: In late winter or early spring, cut back spent flower stems and old foliage to the base before new growth emerges. This keeps the plant tidy and encourages a fresh flush of growth.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and reduce self-seeding. Dried flower heads can also be left for winter interest if desired.
Fertilising: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, which can cause weak, floppy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Sedum ‘Pink Ice’ is highly drought-tolerant and prefers dry to moderately moist, free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly in winter.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear-treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Provide good airflow to reduce the risk of powdery mildew. Remove any yellowing or diseased leaves promptly. Overcrowding can lead to poor airflow, so divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour.
