Carex buchananii, commonly known as leatherleaf sedge, is a distinctive perennial grass known for its fine, copper-bronze leaves that maintain their colour throughout the year. This New Zealand native forms upright, tufted clumps, giving it a striking appearance that adds texture and colour contrast to garden designs.

In the garden, Carex buchananii is ideal for adding vertical interest and a touch of warmth to mixed borders, rockeries, or as part of a grass garden. It works well in contemporary, naturalistic, and even in water-wise garden settings, providing year-round interest. Its unique colour and form make it a great companion plant for green-leaved plants and those with silver or purple foliage.

Leatherleaf sedge thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for gardens with low water availability.
